Rest In Peace To The Great Bill Fay

I just learned that the great Bill Fay has passed away. I’ve been a fan of his music since I first heard it around 2004, but it wasn’t until about five years ago that I truly dug into his work. His songs are heartbreaking, wise, and deeply moving sung with the voice of a man who sounds broken, yet whose heart remains vast as the sky.
I remember talking to my therapist about how much his music was affecting me at the time. Some of Bill’s songs felt like they ran parallel to the things we discussed especially the idea that I didn’t need to be afraid or apologize for being Patrick. “You can be your very giving, loving self to all who want to experience that,” my therapist would say. “Nobody should try to dim that light. Don’t be scared of being yourself.” Those words really shook me. I think he shared the 4 Agreements book with me around this time as well, and that has been a constant companion since.
The last time I completely lost myself in recording a song alone, I chose to record Bill Fay’s Be Not So Fearful. The mix is rough, my singing could be better, and I probably should have spent a few more hours on it but I remember feeling like I had to record this song. I don’t think I ever really shared it with anyone. But today, in honor of what Bill Fay’s music has meant to me, I feel grateful to have recorded one of his songs in my lifetime.
Thank you for writing it and all the other ones Mr. Fay.
Rest in peace good sir.
