Patrick Tape Fleming is an American musician, based in Central Iowa, (Ames/Des Moines) songwriter, producer, and performer best known as member of The Poison Control Center, the creative force behind Gloom Balloon, and the founder of Patrick’s Quick Hitters. Fleming has been a prominent figure in the independent music scene, recognized for his dynamic live performances, innovative songwriting, and contributions as a producer and engineer.
Early Life and Career
Fleming emerged as a key figure in the Midwest indie rock scene (Ames, and Des Moines, IA), gaining attention as one of the lead vocalist and guitarist for The Poison Control Center (PCC). The band became known for their energetic, theatrical performances and extensive touring. In 2011, The A.V. Club named them Live Act of the Year, citing their unpredictable stage antics and high-energy shows. PCC toured nationally, including a stint with The Apples in Stereo, and performed at major festivals such as SXSW, CMJ, and the 80/35 Music Festival.
Musical Projects
The Poison Control Center (1999–2012)
Founded in the late 1990s, The Poison Control Center released several albums and became a staple of the indie rock scene. Their 2011 album, Stranger Ballet, was critically acclaimed, and the band's relentless touring schedule solidified their reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in indie rock.
Gloom Balloon (2013–2020)
Following PCC’s hiatus, Fleming formed Gloom Balloon, an experimental pop project blending spoken-word, orchestral arrangements, and avant-garde elements. The project showcased a more introspective and conceptual approach to music. The band's first single featured Bob Nastanovich of Pavement. In 2020, Gloom Balloon’s album Drying The Eyes of the Goddess of Gloom was named Iowa's Album of the Decade by Pretty Fort Weekly.
Patrick’s Quick Hitters
Patrick Tape Fleming also launched the online song writing project, Patrick’s Quick Hitters, a fast-paced, lo-fi project focused on immediate, unfiltered songwriting. The project reflects his belief in raw creativity and spontaneity, resulting in a prolific output of short, high-energy recordings all under 90 seconds long.
