From the very first time I talked to Rudy, I knew we would be friends forever. I just felt an immediate kinship with him. I loved the way he talked about music, the way he made me laugh, and the way he approached being an artist and a dad.
And I was constantly amazed by everything Rudy continued to accomplish while dealing with brain cancer. He made art. He was writing/recording/releasing a rock opera. He hosted multiple podcasts. He was a father. He kept creating. All while carrying something most of us could never fully understand.
On this final episode of Perfect Songs Forever as are part of Discograffiti with Rudy Fischmann, he surprised me by choosing a song from a list he had made of songs he wanted played at his funeral.
Now, as a kid who grew up going to funeral conventions with my family, I have to say: it’s very responsible to have your funeral planned out.
Rudy’s choice was Irma Thomas’ beautiful “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)” a song co-written by a very young Randy Newman.
Of course, that led to us talking about the song I want played at my funeral, too. But during the episode, I decided neither of us should need these songs for at least another 40 years.
I wish more than anything we could get those 40 years.
Rudy and I came to music from different places, but we always seemed to meet where perfect songs meet..... somewhere in the heart.
I loved making this show with him. I love you, Rudy.
May the songs be perfect forever.
Just like you.
